DISHWASHER GUIDE

Dishwasher Not Drying Dishes: Settings or a Fault?

A dishwasher can clean well yet leave some items wet. Before assuming a heating fault, compare the materials affected, the programme selected and whether drying performance has actually changed.

IMPORTANT

Observe safely.

This guide describes useful clues, not a confirmed diagnosis. Parts, price and service availability need to be discussed from the appliance and location details.

Compare plastics with plates and glassware

Plastic containers retain less heat than heavier crockery and can remain wet when plates are dry. Concave bases and upturned rims also hold pools of water that no drying system can readily remove. Record whether the whole load is wet or only particular items and surfaces.

Load items at the angles recommended by the manufacturer, leaving gaps rather than nesting bowls together. Water falling from an upper rack during unloading can wet already dry items below. These are loading observations, not evidence of a defective heater. A sudden change across previously dry glassware and plates is more informative.

Review the programme and rinse aid

Quick programmes and different drying options can produce different results. Check whether the chosen programme includes the drying stage you expect and whether an extra-dry option was changed. Some models use residual heat, others have fans or automatic door opening; not every dishwasher uses the same system.

Read the model’s rinse-aid instructions even if using an all-in-one tablet. Refill or adjust only as directed, and clean a spill according to the manual to avoid excess foam. Do not substitute washing-up liquid or other household products. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to tell which factor influenced the result.

If settings and loading do not explain the change, describe the drying pattern through our dishwasher repair enquiry service.

Recognise a pattern that needs assessment

A recurring wet load alongside poor cleaning, unusual cycle length or a heating message deserves assessment. Record the programme, whether it completed and whether dishes seemed normally warm when safely unloading. Do not open a hot running dishwasher, touch internal components or reach into water to estimate temperature.

If an automatic-opening door or fan behaves differently, mention the change rather than trying to force it. A blocked vent, control, sensor or heating issue may be relevant, but the visible result does not confirm one part. For models without automatic opening, follow the manual’s unloading guidance rather than propping the door open during a cycle.

SAFE CHECKS

What to note before you enquire.

  1. Compare wet plastics, pooled rims and normally dry crockery.
  2. Read the selected programme and drying options.
  3. Check rinse-aid level and loading only as the manual permits.
When to stop using it

Avoid hot steam and internal parts. Stop use for leaks, burning smells or electrical trips; never open panels to test a heater.

PREPARE THE ENQUIRY

Details that reduce guesswork.

Useful details

  • Model, programme and drying options
  • Which materials remain wet and when the change began
  • Rinse-aid use, cycle completion and any warning

When to arrange an assessment

Seek assessment when drying has clearly deteriorated across ordinary loads despite following the model’s loading and programme guidance.

GUIDE QUESTIONS

Before you take the next step.

Do wet plastic containers prove a heating fault?

No. Plastics and pooled surfaces can stay wet even when the programme is operating normally. Compare the rest of the load and previous results.

Can I add ordinary washing-up liquid as rinse aid?

No. Use only products specified for the appliance and follow the model instructions. Excess foam can cause leaks and other problems.

Discuss the next step.

Service options depend on your model, location and access. A guide cannot confirm the diagnosis or repair cost.
