Gas odour takes priority over troubleshooting
If you smell gas, stop attempts to light the appliance. Do not use flames or operate electrical switches nearby. Leave the affected area and follow your local gas emergency guidance; call emergency services from a safe location if there is immediate danger. A routine repair enquiry is not an emergency response.
Do not try to find a leak with a flame, loosen a fitting or test the supply. If the normal controls can be turned off safely without remaining in danger, do so, but do not delay leaving to reach an inaccessible valve. Follow instructions from the emergency service or gas supplier.
Describe observations from the original attempt
When there is no gas smell or other immediate hazard, record whether one burner or all burners were affected and whether there was clicking at all. Some designs spark at multiple burners when one control is operated, so that pattern alone is not proof of a fault.
Mention a recent spill, cleaning session or power interruption. Moisture or a displaced removable part may be relevant, but do not dismantle ignition parts or repeatedly test burners to confirm a theory. Any routine cleaning or reassembly must follow the exact manufacturer instructions on a switched-off, fully cool appliance.
Once any immediate gas concern has been dealt with, ask about location-appropriate authorised options through our cooktop repair enquiry service.
Leave ignition and supply work to authorised service
Do not probe jets, bend electrodes, remove knobs to reach switches or adjust the gas supply. Do not use a match or lighter as a workaround unless the manufacturer explicitly provides an approved procedure; with an unexplained ignition problem, arranging assessment is the safer next step.
Include the model, gas type if known, affected burners and whether the problem is no spark, failure to light or continued clicking. Tell the service provider about any odour, flame change or recent installation. Appropriate authorised service options must be confirmed for the appliance and location; this guide does not promise gas repair availability in every postcode.
