Set expectations for the extraction design
A ducted hood is intended to move air outdoors through a duct path. A recirculating hood filters air and returns it to the room, so it does not remove moisture outdoors in the same way. Persistent steam alone cannot establish a motor failure without knowing the installation.
Compare performance with the hood’s previous operation, not just with a different kitchen. Note the fan speed, cooking position and whether windows or nearby doors were open. Strong cross-draughts can move vapour away from the capture area. Do not create a smoke test or use an open flame to trace airflow.
Follow filter care for the exact model
With the appliance off and cool, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for accessible grease-filter cleaning. Some filters can be washed in specified ways; others have restrictions. Recirculating designs may also use an odour filter that needs replacement rather than washing. Check the part type before soaking anything.
Refit permitted removable filters securely before use. Do not run the hood without its required filters to prove the fan is stronger, and do not reach through openings towards blades or wiring. A filter that looks clean does not rule out a concealed airflow restriction or an installation problem.
If filter care does not explain the loss of airflow, discuss the installation and fan behaviour through our rangehood repair enquiry service.
Identify what changed beyond routine maintenance
Describe whether every speed sounds the same, one setting no longer works or the decline was gradual. Mention renovations, duct changes or a new external cover. Inspect only what is visible from a safe floor position; do not enter roof spaces, climb to external outlets or disconnect ducting.
If routine permitted filter care does not restore the previous performance, provide the model, ducted or recirculating type and the pattern of weak extraction. Fan, controls, duct path and installation can all be relevant. An assessment should distinguish an appliance repair from a ventilation-design issue before parts are chosen.
