Allow the normal release sequence
An end signal and the door-unlocked indicator are not always simultaneous. Consult the model’s instructions for the normal release delay and allow that time with the drum stationary. A pause command may not release the door during a hot stage or while the machine senses a high water level.
Check the difference between a control-lock symbol and the door-lock symbol in the manual. Control lock can stop buttons responding without being the reason the door stays secured. Do not repeatedly power-cycle the appliance or use an online button combination intended for a different model.
Look for water and heat before doing anything else
Visible water against the door is a reason to leave it shut. Opening it could release a large volume onto the floor. A recently interrupted hot programme also presents a scalding risk, even if only a small amount of water is visible. Keep children away while you work out the cycle status.
A locked door accompanied by retained water may be secondary to drainage rather than a broken handle. Record both symptoms. Do not open a filter, use an emergency-release cable or tilt the appliance based on generic instructions; safe access and draining arrangements differ substantially between models.
For a door that remains secured after the normal release delay, explain the water level and lock behaviour in a washing machine repair enquiry service.
Protect the handle and prepare access details
Stop attempting to open the door if the handle feels loose, cracked or different from normal. Tools, string and levering can damage the latch and do not remove the reason the safety lock is engaged. Never bypass an interlock to retrieve clothing or run the machine.
Tell the repairer whether clothes and water remain inside, the last programme used, and whether a power cut preceded the problem. Mention a stacked dryer or a tight cupboard before service is arranged. You do not need to move a heavy appliance to find an inaccessible rating label; an existing manual or purchase record can help identify it.
